There are many words that describe the perspectives and experiences of people living with mental illness: on the negative side - prison, grey, sad, tiring and being alone to name but a few, and positively - laughter, excitement and fun. You can probably think of others.

These words express a personal experience that may be unimaginable to many. Here at the Mental Health Foundation (ACT), we get to know and guide many individuals: all with their own unique experiences and situations. We understand that every person is different who have their own needs, aspirations and difficulties in life - a personalised journey to recovery.

Our PHaM Program
The Personal Helpers and Mentors Program is a free service, designed to help, support and encourage people who live with a severe mental illness – even if not diagnosed. Our service is available for anybody over the age of 16 who lives in the designated postcodes*.

We assist participants in recognising, building and enhancing their own life skills to better manage themselves and their illness. Our flexible approach ensures everyone receives the most effective support and that they make the best of their situation.

Depending on the individual, we may:
  • Assist in developing life long skills
  • Help people to reconnect with their community, family and friends
  • Provide direct and personalised assistance through outreach services
  • Refer and link people to appropriate services, such as accommodation, clinical, drug and alcohol
  • Guide clients on some parenting difficulties they may have
Ultimately we help people realise themselves that there is still hope for the future and that they can grow with their experiences.

Program Launch
The Personal Helpers and Mentors (PHaM) program was officially launched on the 15th of October 2007 at The Rainbow: Canberra’s only psycho-social rehabilitation centre, located at the Canberra Technology Park, in Watson.

The launch provided attendees with an insight into the differing perspectives and motivations around the program. Speakers came from the mental health community, from both the government and community sectors. All spoke passionately of PHaM, of the positive difference the program makes in the lives of people who experience severe mental illness, of its unique concept and design.
